CARL F.K. PAO
VISUAL ARTIST/EDUCATOR
Born (1971) and raised on the island of O`ahu, Carl graduated from Kamehameha Schools (1989, earned a BFA (Outstanding Senior Ceramic Student Award) at the University of Hawai`i at Mänoa (1994) and then received his MFA (1999) with first-class honors in from Elam School of Fine Arts at the University of Auckland, Aotearoa. Since 2000, Carl has been teaching full-time at the Kamehameha Schools High School in Visual Arts. In January 2018, Carl transferred to the Kamehameha Schools Kea’au campus on the island of Hawai’i.
Outside of his teaching schedule, Carl continues to professionally practice his own art. He initiated a series of growing exhibits based on the Hawaiian concept of Maka with the most recent, MakahÄ€ 2016; was the inaugural Artist in Residence at the Australian National University (ANU) College of Asia and the Pacific in July 2012; had a successful group exhibition at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian in July 2011; hosted and co-produced three seasons of the educational art series Art Hunter; actively participates in SOLO AND GROUP art exhibits both locally and abroad; and, his work is collected and commissioned by both private and public parties.
Carl lives with his wife and daughter iN ‘Ola’a on the island of Hawai’i.
